On March 14, 1993, during the installation and construction of a FRP cooling tower in a chemical plant in Liaoning, the electric welding spark fell onto the polypropylene corrugated sheet inside the tower, causing fire. In just 10 minutes, the cooling tower was completely burned, and the direct economic loss was 19,000. yuan. 10 years later, on July 27, 2003, for the same reason, the cooling tower was completely burned, and the direct economic loss was more than 30,000 yuan. Similar accidents have occurred in Hubei, Shanghai and other places. Fires in FRP cooling towers sometimes cause fires in related equipment and workshops, with economic losses ranging from tens of thousands of dollars to hundreds of thousands of yuan.

Accident

On July 27, 2003, the welder was welding the platform and railing near the tower of the FRP cooling tower. At this time, the welder received instructions from the squad leader to suspend the operation. The welder then stopped the welding operation and hangs the welding tongs in the edge of the cooling tower. Since the welding rod on the welding tongs touches the steel strip along the rim, an electric welding spark is generated, and the electric welding spark is splashed from the tower to the packing corrugated sheet in the tower. At the same time, some people saw smoke on the corrugated sheet about 30 cm away from the tower shell. Next, the smoke spread and the fire broke out. When the person working on the lower layer of the corrugated sheet looked up, he found that the corrugated sheet had a drop of oily Mars down...

The fire in the cooling tower spread rapidly and soon formed a fire that was several meters high. The construction personnel asked the ground personnel for water and fire extinguishers, but they had not waited for the ground personnel to come back. In just 10 minutes, the NBL-200 FRP cooling tower was completely burned. The fire was still burning, and the firefighters who arrived were extinguished with water. What was left on the scene was only the unstained FRP melt and the angle bracket that supported the cooling tower. The accident caused direct economic losses of 19,000 yuan.

Cause Analysis

Polypropylene corrugated sheet is easy to burn. From the structural point of view, the shell of the FRP cooling tower is formed by using unsaturated polyester as a binder and glass cloth as a reinforcing material. The packing in the tower is a modified polyvinyl chloride corrugated sheet or a corrugated sheet made of polypropylene, which is extremely flammable in case of fire, which is the main cause of fire accidents.

From the scene, the welding rod touches the steel strip on the tower, and the generated welding spark (temperature up to 1000 °C) splashes on the polypropylene corrugated sheet inside the tower. Under the action of high temperature, the polypropylene corrugated sheet with a melting point of only 164 degrees Celsius began to melt, smoke, and ignite from the spot of the welding spark splash (the subsequent simulation test confirmed this process). The tower was well ventilated and the wind helped the fire. In just 10 minutes, the cooling tower was completely burned.

Safety education before construction is insufficient, workers are blindly working

The cooling tower is manufactured by a water purification equipment factory in Henan Province. Article 10 of the "Installation Precautions" reads: Because the filler is flammable, it is strictly prohibited to weld at the installation site. At the same time, the location of the FRP cooling tower should have a standing arson. Measures. Before the installation and construction, the plant did not pay enough attention to this precaution, and lacked awareness of the fire hazard of the cooling tower, which led to blind operation of the workers, which is also an important cause of the accident.

There are gaps in safety management, and there are chapters that do not follow

Before the installation and construction, if the "fire certificate" is handled in accordance with the fire management regulations, it may not cause losses. However, people have insufficient understanding of the importance of handling fire certificates, and they do not apply for fires. This is also one of the causes of accidents.
