Anti-pathogenic microorganisms: In vitro experiments have shown that Hopu decoction against Staphylococcus, hemolytic streptococcus, pneumococcus, Bordetella pertussis and other Gram-positive bacteria and Bacillus anthracis, Shigella, Salmonella typhi, paratyphoid bacillus, Vibrio cholerae Escherichia coli, Proteus, Bacillus subtilis and other gram-negative bacilli have antibacterial effects. Experiments show that Magnolia officinalis has the strongest effect on Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella typhi in comparison with other 61 species of traditional Chinese medicine. Its effect on white staphylococci and Bacillus subtilis is bactericidal. In the test tube, the inhibitory effect of Magnolia officinalis on Staphylococcus aureus was stronger than that of Coptidis Rhizoma, Radix Astragali, and Rhubarb. When the decoction (1:1) was diluted to 1/640, its antibacterial effect was still stronger than that of chlortetracycline. The antibacterial effect of the decoction is not destroyed by heat.
Hopu decoction has inhibitory effects on Trichophyton mongolicus, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Trichophyton rubrum and other skin fungi. Tests on the pathogenic bacteria Streptococcus mutans have shown that the oral toxicity of Magnolia officinalis is both small and has a rapid and effective bactericidal effect.
Magnolia decoction has some effects on improving the pathological lesions of experimental viral hepatitis in mice. In vitro can still kill swine mites.
