The full name of gradual freezing is called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and the English abbreviation is ALS. Freezing is a fatal neurological disease in which the patient develops muscle weakness, convulsions, tremors, degeneration and atrophy. Severe dysphagia, coughing and respiratory decline, loss of activity and self-care ability. There is now only one FDA-approved drug that shows less efficacy. IBM Watson's medical applications are mainly cancer diagnosis and treatment, and now the research on the concept of gradual freezing has achieved outstanding results. IBM announced this month that Watson has discovered five ALS-related genes in collaboration with the Barrow Institute of Neurology in Arizona, USA. This is the first time that IBM Watson has been used in neuroscience, and it is recommended that Watson can be applied to other neurological diseases.
“There are many opportunities to use Watson to get the job done together,†said Dr. Robert Bowser, director of the ALS Research Center at the Barrow Institute of Neurology. “Watson has more application space in neuroscience. We hope to use IBM Watson to get bigger. The ability to work in the most complex organs of the human body helps us identify innovative and more effective treatments for ALS."
Watson studied all published publications and papers related to gradual freezing, as well as proteins known to be associated with the disease. It calculates nearly 1,500 genes in humans and predicts which genes may be associated with gradual freezing.
