US human genome sequencing pioneer j. Craig venter to the newly created company and its human longevity inc. (Hli) to enter the field of biomedical sequencing. Hli is a “genomics and cell diagnosis and treatment company†that is scheduled to start this summer with the ultimate goal of promoting healthy ageing.
Recently, the founder and CEO of the J. Craig venter Institute, Venter, announced that the new company will build the world's largest human genome sequencing center with $70 million in start-up funding. Venter said the company plans to buy 20 new million-dollar sequencing machines from Illumina. "The new technology will eventually make the equipment go beyond the barriers of quality, size and cost to achieve the results I have been expecting," Venter said.
To date, in addition to the limited success of obtaining genetic information for specific tumors for prediction and treatment, personal genetic sequencing has seldom provided clear indications for physicians. But by combining "everything we can measure" with clinical data, venter hopes that the most beneficial treatment or prevention mode can emerge.
