Artificial lung is a life support technology that can be used when the failure of its lung function fails to maintain adequate oxygen supply to the body's organs, or in the long run, the implant permanently replaces the human lung function partially or completely. More than 10,000 patients in the world now use artificial lungs.
Recently, artificial lungs can be breathed, and professors at Yale University in the United States have been successfully trained.
There are three types of artificial lungs: membrane type, bubble type, and plane contact type.
Membrane artificial lungs are composed of tens of thousands of hollow fiber bundles. Each hollow fiber surface is covered with micropores. These pores are extremely small, so that blood can not be infiltrated, but carbon dioxide can be discharged, oxygen can be absorbed, and gas exchange can be performed. (From: Tai Fook Science)
The research team at Harvard Medical School in the United States removed the cells from the lungs of the mice, leaving only the extracellular matrix as a "support" for the growth of new lungs.
Subsequently, they implanted human umbilical cord cells and mouse embryonic cells that can be directed into lung cells in a "support" and placed them in a micro-artificial lung, cultured in an incubator that mimics the living environment.
After the artificial lung was implanted into the experimental mouse, the artificial lung continued to work, and the mouse survived for 6 hours.
