Babylon announced that its next-generation software can achieve medical test scores comparable to human doctors. Even better than the average of human doctors. A stone provokes a thousand waves, and this news undoubtedly threatens the British National Health Service (NHS) based on family doctors. Whether AI will erode the field of doctors, or join hands to discuss.
At an event held at the Royal College of Medicine, Babylon launched this artificial intelligence software.
Babylon Health is the UK's leading digital healthcare services company that aims to deliver affordable health services to everyone. Currently, Babylon Health has more than 1.4 million users worldwide, spanning Europe, Asia and Africa.
Babylon Health's artificial intelligence system communicates with users to understand their specific conditions and provides health assessments and recommendations for health behavior. For example, when a user describes his or her symptoms or physical condition to the system, artificial intelligence can generate an assessment of the individual's health based on the results of the analysis, and give advice on whether to go to the hospital or buy medicines. The main product now is a remote clinic app called NHS GP at hand. In addition, the app also includes services such as health tracking and drug delivery. The arterial network has previously reported this. For details, please refer to: Babylon Health, an artificial intelligence diagnosis and treatment platform, to put AI doctors into the user's mobile phone, and it is easy to see the doctor.
The new artificial intelligence system announced this time will change the level of APP services. If you suspect that there is a medical problem in Babylon's existing APP NHS GP at hand, you will be recommended to a general practitioner. The new chat bot will diagnose itself, provide several possible scenarios, and perform a percentage-based estimate for each case.
Can you replace the family doctor as the focus
But experts from another medical professional body expressed doubts about the ability of artificial intelligence. A royal general practitioner said: "Any application or algorithm can't do what the GP does. An application may pass an automated clinical knowledge test, but the answer to a clinical scenario will not be static. ."
“General practitioners have a lot of factors to consider, and they also need to manage a lot of risks, and pay attention to the impact that the diagnosis may have on the patient's mood,†he added.
Of course, some people regard the challenge brought by artificial intelligence as progress. NHS Chairman Malcolm Grant, who attended the meeting on the same day, said optimistically: "It is difficult to imagine that this historical model of general practitioners, as the cornerstone of NHS and medicine, has not progressed and evolved. We are now at the tipping point of how to provide medical services. So we have been paying attention to what companies like Babylon are doing."
Babylon also showed its voice control technology used by chat bots on Amazon smart speakers.
Professor Martin Marshall, Vice President of RCGP, said: "Babylon's software display can replace doctors and is the focus of our attention."
But Marshall refuted the idea that doctors would be left out. He explained that the purpose of AI is to allow doctors to follow up with doctors. Artificial intelligence is completely incapable of looking after patients on their own. AI requires physicians to complement each other. Artificial intelligence will never replace a doctor, but help a doctor.
Is there any suspected cheating for high score AI robots?
Babylon said his chat robot passed the representative question of the Royal College of General Practitioners exam. The MRCGP (Royal General Practitioners Association Member Exam) is an exam that every member must pass when entering the Faculty.
Babylon said that its artificial intelligence scored 81% on the first test. The average score of human doctors from 2012 to 2017 was 72%.
But RCGP said it did not provide questions to Babylon and could not verify Babylon's statement. “The university exam questions we actually use are not available in the public domain,†added Professor Martin Marshall, Vice President of RCGP.
Babylon responded to the BBC reporter by using sample questions directly published by the college, some of which have indeed been made public.
"If they can officially share their exams with us so that I can accurately copy the exam, we will be very happy." Babylon CEO Ali Parsa told the BBC.
To further test artificial intelligence, Babylon collaborated with doctors at two institutions in the United States—Stanford Primary Care and Yale New Haven Health—and doctors at the Royal College of Medicine.
The company said it has developed 100 real-world scenarios to test artificial intelligence. The company also said it expects its diagnostic skills for chat bots to be further enhanced.
Babylon grand vision
Babylon's goal is to provide affordable health care to people around the world. Since 2016, Babylon has worked with the Rwandan government. The 1994 genocide killed more than 800,000 people, and the country’s health care services have since been severely damaged. Babylon has 2 million registered users in Rwanda and has conducted tens of thousands of consulting services.
In China, Babylon is holding hands with the giant Tencent. In this year, we have reached a cooperation with Tencent. The two sides based on Babylon Health's artificial intelligence system to conduct research and research on health assessment.
