Alzheimer's disease is a syndrome characterized by memory, thinking, behavior, and decline in daily activity, mainly in the middle-aged and elderly population.
Researchers at Yale University and the National Institute on Aging in the United States recruited 4,765 elderly people over the age of 60 who did not develop dementia at the start of the study. By extracting saliva samples, the researchers confirmed that 1,250 of them carry the specific gene associated with dementia, the apolipoprotein E-4 gene.
Researchers in the US Science Public Library·Comprehensive magazine reported that during the four-year period, researchers used telephone to keep in touch with participants and used a written questionnaire to assess their perceptions of aging. They asked participants to use numbers to rate their feelings. The results showed that for people with dementia-related genes, the rate of dementia was 2.7% for people who had positive attitudes toward aging, and 6.1% for those with negative opinions.
The researchers pointed out that for the elderly with a higher risk of dementia, positively treating aging, adapting to aging and reducing the pressure to cope with aging can protect themselves from dementia to a certain extent.
