Carp and squid are familiar species of freshwater fish and they are often made into a big dish on the table. However, due to improper long-term husbandry and management, the variety, production, and quality of the varieties have fallen drastically, ultimately affecting the appetite of diners. In response to this situation, the use of biological cell engineering technology by Liu Yan, a professor of the College of Life Sciences of Hunan Normal University and an academician of the Academy of Engineering, succeeded in breeding a breeding population of new tetraploid fish with stable genetic traits and fertile breeding habits. This method of breeding successful allogenic tetraploid fish populations provides the necessary theoretical basis for exploring the polyploid formation mechanism of fishes in nature, and provides a new approach for polyploid breeding of fishes. This achievement won the second prize of national scientific and technological progress in 2003. The application of allotetraploid fish to large scale production has resulted in the development of fish products that have excellent production characteristics and high quality triploid carp and carp.

The two invention patents of “tetraploid fish breeding method” and “triploid oyster fish production method and equipment” were listed as national “863” pilot projects, and were implemented by Hunan Xiangyun Biotechnology Co., Ltd. in 2001. Production has formed a scale of industrialization with an annual output of 1 billion triploid carp and carp seedlings. The company's seed production has been promoted in all provinces and cities except Tibet and Taiwan. Since the implementation of the patent, a total of 2 billion seedlings have been produced and a total of nearly 100 million mu of aquaculture water has been promoted. Triploid Carassius auratus and Carassius auratus are favored by consumers due to their fast growth, large individuals, complete infertility, strong resistance to stress, lack of fleshy, and delicious taste. The market price is much higher than that of ordinary quail and squid. The products are also shipped to Japan, South Korea and the Southeast, and can create a direct economic benefit of 1 billion yuan each year.

Because the triploid fish itself is completely infertile, it is of great significance to change the aquaculture production and decline of the aquaculture production caused by the chaotic and salmon farming species. The triploids produced by allotetraploid fish are important. Yunyi and Xiangyun squid can be stocked in any cultured waters, and will not naturally reproduce or damage the original species of squid or carp, thus effectively protecting natural resources and the ecological environment.
