US medical device company Thoratec announced on the 26th that it recalled a specific batch of heart pumps, and five patients who have implanted the heart pump have died. Recently, I visited many hospitals in Guangzhou and learned that heart transplant surgery is rare in Guangzhou.
According to foreign reports, Thoratec said that the recalled product model is "Heart Companion 2", and patients who have been implanted should check the heart pump. The company received 27 reports and found that one of the wires in the heart pump was aging and needed to be replaced immediately, and a total of five patients died because of the inability to perform replacement surgery. This type of heart pump began clinical research in November 2003 and has been sold to 153 hospitals and distributors in the United States and other countries.
The relevant person in charge of the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical College said that the hospital is only allowed to undergo lung transplant surgery, and the heart has not yet been carried out. Therefore, it is not known about the recovery of the heart pump by American companies.
