After being implanted in the body, the ICM can continuously monitor the patient's heart rhythm. It transmits heart rate data to a smartphone via Bluetooth. Patients can use the app myMerlin to view these data and add notes, which will help doctors track their condition.

Earlier this year, Abbott acquired the Confirm Rx device and the myMerlin app for $25 billion in the acquisition of St. Jude Medical.

Abbott said that connecting the ICM to a smartphone can avoid relying on large bedside transmitters and separate handheld activators. This means that patients can record symptoms at any time and send them to the doctor without having to wait for a nighttime synchronization like a traditional transmitter.

Dr. Avi Fischer, Vice President and Medical Director of Abbott’s Heart Management Division, said: “Confirm Rx shows that we can use cutting-edge communication technology and state-of-the-art medical equipment to provide new opportunities for improved patient care. By providing patients with the ability to take advantage of intelligence With Bluetooth mobile devices, we can help doctors easily and remotely diagnose potentially dangerous abnormal heartbeats without the need for patients to use separate or cumbersome recording devices."

Implantable cardiac monitors are currently used to assess symptoms such as palpitations that may be caused by arrhythmia and the like. In the future, they may also play a new role in managing patients with atrial fibrillation and patients at risk for ventricular arrhythmias.

Dr. Georg Nölker of the Herz-und Diabeteszentrum NRW in Ruhr-University, Germany, said: "The Confirm Rx ICM device will be an important tool for diagnosing patients with suspected arrhythmias and can be used to experience syncope. Or palpitations, etc."
