In recent years, artificial intelligence technology has developed rapidly and its application has extended to the field of bio-manufacturing. Recently, with the help of artificial intelligence technology, the Wubian team, a researcher at the Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has developed a series of novel enzyme proteins. For the first time in the world, the research team has obtained full-scale computational guidance and obtained industrial-grade microbial engineering strains, providing an example for the breakthrough of artificial intelligence in industrial application of bio-manufacturing.
The team obtained an artificial beta-amino acid synthase. Wu Bian introduced that β-amino acids are a large class of non-protein amino acids and are widely used in medicine, food, agriculture, and animal husbandry. In addition, it is also used in the synthesis of important active natural products and pharmaceuticals, and is a synthesis unit of some anticancer drugs and diabetes drugs. For a long time, the synthesis of β-amino acids relies on metal catalysis, which is not only expensive, but also causes chemical pollution to the environment. How to obtain β-amino acids by green biological methods has become a problem that plagues the industry. After repeated trials, the Wubian team used artificial intelligence technology to design proteins and comprehensively selected potential energy calculation methods. The representative molecules were redesigned and a series of artificial β-amino acid synthetases were successfully obtained. "The artificially designed reaction system has the advantages of high efficiency, high atomic economy and green environmental protection, and related indicators have reached the standards of industrial production." Wu said.
The results of relevant research have been published in Nature's Chemical Biology, a sub-supplier of Nature magazine. Experts in the industry stated that the research team has provided successful cases for artificial intelligence technology in the design direction of industrial strains and verified its scientific theoretical basis, which is expected to open up new ideas for the integration of artificial intelligence and traditional industrial production.
