New generation of cardiac CT technology reduces radiation by 91%

In a new study, US researchers have determined that cardiac imaging using the latest generation of CT technology is 91% less than using standard spiral CT scans.

"In recent years, due to the high accuracy of coronary CT angiography assessment for patients with suspected coronary heart disease, it has generated great application enthusiasm in recent years," said Professor of Clinical and Clinical Clinical Assistant Professor of Cardiology and Radiology at Columbia University Medical Center. Andrew J. Einstein said "However, this enthusiasm dilutes concerns about the exposure of potential patients to radiation doses."

During CT imaging, the patient may receive radiation effects. Many coronary CT angiograms are performed on a 64-slice spiral CT scanner that scans 4 cm at a time. The latest CT scanning technology 320-row detector CT scanner can scan 16 cm at a time, the entire length of the heart, in one rotation and during a heartbeat.

Using a standard 64-row spiral detector as the reference scan, the optimized 320-row volumetric scanning detector reduced the effective radiation dose by 91% from 35.4 mSv to 4.4 mSv.

According to Dr. Einstein, state-of-the-art CT technology achieves optimal image resolution and adjusts and adjusts doses based on a variety of functions and scan modes for lower radiation doses, as well as individual patient needs. With the development of CT technology from the 16th layer to the 64th layer, the radiation dose has risen remarkably, and the current development of the technology will go in the opposite direction, that is, reduce the radiation.
