The fume hood is designed to provide protection for toxic or volatile chemicals by continuously delivering airflow from the user to the work area. The air is then filtered and/or treated by the building's exhaust system before exiting the facility.
Why use a fume hood ?
The fume hood reduces potential exposure to personnel, including the concentration of contaminants near the edge of the window frame. The fume hood does not provide protection for the product or the environment.
Any toxic or volatile (chemical vaporization trend) chemical must be used in a chemical fume hood to reduce the chance of inhalation exposure. Specially designed fume hoods are required to provide protection against radiological hazards.
Fume hood design considerations
The "rolling" air formed in the fume hood immediately behind the sash can be a reservoir of contaminants. The air recirculates at this location rather than leaving the hood immediately, so the contaminant concentration can be higher in the "roller" than at other points within the hood.
