Researchers develop anti-fungal infections with 3D dentures

U.S. research teams have used 3D printing technology to develop a special type of denture that contains microcapsules that regularly release antifungal drugs, which can cost-effectively prevent oral infection of denture wearers.

A study published in the "Materials and Communications Today" magazine recently showed that this type of 3D printed denture is made of polymethyl methacrylate, a material commonly used in clinical prostheses such as dentures and artificial joints.

The researchers placed permeable, biodegradable microspheres in this material and injected microspheres with the antifungal drug amphotericin B. The drug diffused through the porous layer into the mouth of the denture wearer. Different from the traditional way of disinfecting dentures, patients can disinfect their mouths while wearing dentures.

After testing, the researchers found that the microspheres can continuously release drugs and can effectively inhibit Candida albicans "settled" in the oral cavity, and the 3D printed dentures have the same properties as traditional dentures in terms of compression resistance, impact resistance, and the like.

Pravin Alani, an assistant professor of dentistry at the Department of Oral Biology at the State University of New York at Buffalo College of Dentistry, said the technique allows clinicians to customize dental prostheses for patients in the dental chair. The traditional production process takes several days. It takes several weeks to produce.

The research team said that next will further study the use of glass fiber and carbon nanotubes and other materials to strengthen the denture strength. In addition, this technology can also be applied to various clinical tools such as splints, stents and prostheses.
