Korean scientists have developed a fast-moving micro-robot that can be remotely controlled. The robot can directly transport the therapeutic drugs needed by the organs through human blood, which makes the scenes in science fiction become fast.
The robot was developed by the Robotics Engineering Institute of DGIST University in Korea. The new micro-robots are highly maneuverable and move at least eight times faster than previous similar robots, moving in a similar way to the microbial movement of the ciliated organism's ciliary organisms.
Now, it is urgent to study how to deliver drugs directly to a place like a blocked artery or tumor where the body needs to be cured. The main challenge in creating a miniature robot that can reach a damaged organ is how it moves in a microfluidic environment.
The way microbes such as bacteria and protozoa move is justified – in the macro environment they cannot effectively move large fluids through fluids, especially in liquids with higher water concentrations. That's why scientists and engineers have been searching for answers in nature, and trying to move micro-robots in ways that move like microbes like protozoa and bacteria.
The Korean research team used 3D laser lithography to form the basic structure of the micro-robot's ciliated polymer, then a layer of nickel and titanium under the cilia to provide magnetic actuation and ensure compatibility with biological systems. As a result, researchers can use the electromagnetic coil system to control the movement of the cilia back and forth.
The researchers say that a 20-micron-long robot can move 340 micrometers per second, and its operability range is wider than that of a micro-robot driven by magnetic attraction. The remote controller can change the angle of the micro-robot from 0 to 120 degrees, which allows it to move completely under venous blood.
